The goal is twofold, to provide part time jobs for teenagers to help the Code Enforcement and Public Works Departments with litter pickup and secondly to give the students the experience of performing community service. SCUC will partner with financial institutions. businesses and community partners to achieve this worthwhile endeavor. Those institutions will not only aid in providing financial stipends for the youth workers but also in provide the trainings for the students. The SCUC Litter Patrol Beautification Program starts each year in June and last for six weeks. The goal is to serve up to 100 students ages 12 to 17 each year.

Clean neighborhoods are vital for creating strong, healthy, and safe communities. Residents in many of those neighborhoods currently keep their properties however, some elderly individuals may need help. There are several vacant lots where trash and litter are dumped. Student participants workMulti-generation mixed race family spending time outside together, all wearing blue volunteer t shirts and protective gloves, collecting garbage, holding garbage bags, on a sunny day three days per week for two hours per day however, hours can increase providing funds are available.
For many students, the Litter Patrol Beautification program will be a starting point to gaining part time employment and learn to manage their finances. The youth work three days per week for six hour and each Friday they participate in financial literacy classes. This is designed to teach them money management, discipline, teamwork, and other skills that they will need for the future. We hope this program will inspire people throughout the city of Peoria to take ownership and pride in their communities.

SCUC provides a vehicle in which ALL members may actively involve themselves in the affairs of the neighborhood. SCUC is one of nearly 100 neighborhood organizations (Directory 10/2005) in the City of Peoria. SCUC provides a way for Southside residents to become involved in neighborhood and city issues, starting with their neighborhood. A “single” voice may only get a few results on a neighborhood issue, but a “collective” voice can have a huge impact on securing resources for the Southside community.
